The Slovak national sides of the euro coins

The Bank Board of the NBS has approved on 20 December 2005 the selected motifs to appear on the Slovak national sides of euro coins and their artistic designs.

In the opinion of the NBS Bank Board, the selected artistic designs symbolise the Slovak Republic, its European cultural and historic traditions, and its rich natural heritage in the most suitable and concise way; and dignify the Slovak Republic abroad.

At the same time, the selected artistic designs were the most successful in the anonymous competition opened to the public in July 2004 to select the artistic designs for the Slovak sides of euro coins, and they gained the broadest support of our citizens in the opinion poll in November 2005. The minting of euro coins with Slovak national sides started in 2008, pending the EU Council gave consent on the accession of the Slovak Republic to the euro area on 1 January 2009.

Krivan
The Tatra Krivan Peak is related to major events in Slovak history. As the destination for tours undertaken by patriots associated with Ludovit Stur, it played an important role in the struggle for national awakening. The Krivan Peak is perceived as a symbol of the High Tatra Mountains, and, in a broader sense, as a symbol of the diverse natural wealth of Slovakia.
